Mary Shelley's Frankenstein

As an introduction to the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley we have watched the film directed by  Kenneth Branagh in 1994. The movie, starring Robert De Niro and Kenneth Branagh himself, is considered the most faithful film adaptation of Mary Shelley's novel.

Here you have the Wikipedia page of the film.

  1. The film starts with a ship trapped in the ice of the North Pole. Here the crew meets Dr. Frankenstein and the monster he created. Frankenstein starts telling his story. He moved from Geneva to Ingolstadt to study and there he created the monster who killed a part of his family. The creation of that creature ruins Frankenstein's rationality and when the monsters reads Victor's journal he learns about his unnatural birth and vows revenge on his creator. The prejudices people have about the creature when they see him make the monster angrier so he doesn't try to have relations with other men. I was surprised by the monster because I thought he hated all the people but he tries to be pleasant with men. But when they see him they run away from that terrible monster. I haven’t disliked anything of the film.

  2. The movie is set in dark atmospheres typical of the 19th Century Industrial England.
Doctor Victor Frankenstein is a complex character because his thoughts and his ambitions are typical of Industrial Revolution’s scientists. But his ambition becomes his guilt; he goes beyond human limits and his discovery becomes a burden to him.
Instead, the creature represents the decay of scientific research. He is rejected by society and by his “father” because of his appearance and because of prejudices of people. In my opinion, he becomes a monster when he decides to take revenge by killing his enemies. His actions are led by his desperate research for justice and love.
My favourite scene from the movie is the moment where the monster decides to burn along with his own creator because , I think, it is the key to understand how the personalities of the two main characters complete each other.
On the contrary, I didn’t like the way the monster was portrayed in the second half of the movie: he is often seen just as a serial killer and not as a tragic anti-hero.
In conclusion, in our society the creature represents people who are different from us. We are the doctor and the creature at the same time; but, unlike them, we can decide what to do: we can either love or ignore any other living being.

  3. Mary Shelley’s Frankestein is a 1994 film, based on Mary Shelley’s novel.
Victor Frankestein is a good medical student who is in love with his stepsister Elizabeth. He decides to try an experiment. He gives life to a strong creature, composed by parts of dead bodies. In fact he realizes that this experiment is a mistake, so he decides to let die the creature. The monster survives and learns how to read and write, but he is rejected by other people and his creator. So the monster decides to take revenge.
In this film I loved the interpretations, because the characters’ emotions were really realistic. The cast is really great, Robert De Niro as the creature, Kenneth Branagh as Victor Frankestein.
The doctor’s actions causing death of people that he loves and his repentance is visible.
The creature in appearance is a monster but he is very smart. In fact he reads Victor’s journal and learns that he is the product of parts of dead bodies. De Niro brings real feelings to the role when the creature talks with his creator and asks “What of my soul? Do I have one?”.
In the end the monster shows that he is apparently bad, indeed he loves his creator Victor, he calls him “father” and he decides to die with him.
My favourite scene is when Victor brings back to life his girlfriend Elizabeth and they dance. In this part the director shows where Victor’s desperation and love can get to.
I did not like the darkness of the scenes, but I think that it was necessary to represent horror story.

  4. The 1994 Mary Shelley's film tells the story of the doctor Victor Frankenstein who was found by a ship captain on the North Pole while he was dying.
Ten years before Victor was searching the secret of life and when he found the solution, he decided to create a body made of human relics and to give him life.
Later Victor feels disgusted for this creature and escapes. The monster is forced to run away from the people who beats him up. Then he learns to read and does good actions for some farmers, but when they discover him, he gets banned from there too.
So the monster rebels to his creator and kills some of Victor's relatives. Frankenstein chases him to kill him but he dies. Then the monster dies too.
My favourite scene is the last, when the creature exposes his love for the creator and calls him father. At the end he decides to die with Victor.
For me the monster was initially judged badly by men although his good actions and in the second part of the film he acts with desperation.
I didn't like the darkest scenes, in particular the ones where the monster kills Victor's relatives who didn't commit any crime.

  5. The movie is based on the relationship between Frankenstein and the monster. The monster isn't bad against men but only against the creator. He's an imperfect creature and he seeks love in the eyes of other humans but they find disgust for his dreadful shape. Because of these prejudices he becomes angrier. Because of this creature Frankenstein goes mad and tries to kill him. I liked the relationship between the two characters. Throughout the movie they hate each other and try to kill each other. But they respect each other and the monster considers Frankenstein his father.

  6. Frankenstein is a horror film based on the novel by Mary Shelley.
Frankenstein is found almost dead in the North Pole. He was a medical student and wanted to understand why life existed and how to create it.
He creates a body by cutting pieces of different dead people and he brings it back to life using electricity.
Frankenstein is so disgusted by the creature that he leaves as soon as he sees what he has done and the creature is forced to live on his own in a world he knows nothing about. While Frankenstein goes on with his life and marries Elizabeth, the creature is seeking revenge on his father and to do so, he kills the beloved of Frankenstein.
I think the monster has feelings and is sensitive he is violent because none accepts him because he is different.
I don’t like horror movies, because the scenes are violent and obscure.
My favourite scene is when Elizabeth remembers the name of her lover, Frankenstein, although she becomes a monster.

  7. The story of the film '' Mary Shelley's Frankenstein '' is based on the famous Mary Shelley's novel, written between 1816 and 1817.
The story talks about a famous scientist from Geneva, Frankenstein, who has always wanted to find out how a living being can create another being. After years of studies based on this big question, he discovers that the solution is electricity.
The scientist assembles various pieces of corpses, he creates a human body and manages to give it life. That was born from his experiment, is a monstrous being and for this reason he will always be excluded from all, as his “father” did. For this reason he takes revenge and he attacks throughout the course of the story, all the people that are around its creator. The story ends in a different environment, in the North Pole where Frankenstein dies and at his funeral the monster decides to kill himself with him.
The protagonist of the story is interpreted excellently by Robert De Niro, he across the screen, can transmit the feelings and the torments that afflict the character. Frankenstein, was interpreted by Kenneth Branagh (who also plays the role of the director) is a bit lackluster in the story, while the role of his wife, Elizabeth, is interpreted excellently by Helena Bonham Carter, an excellent actress.
The most beautiful scene of the story, in my opinion, is the conclusion, when the creature decides to die with his creator. The moral of the story is present in this part: we humans give life to ours monsters and if we fail to manage them, they will guide us until the death.

  8. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is a 1994 horror drama film that is considered the most faithful film to Mary Shelley's novel. Victor Frankenstein is a young man who is obsessed with the utopia to
give life to inanimate matter. He assembles, after a lot of study, parts of dead bodies and he brings this creature back to life, creating a “monster”. This creature has supernatural strength and an horrible appearance, that inspires fear and disgust in whoever sees him; but he just wants an identity and friendship. I really love the way in which this character is represented. He tries to integrate in society, he learns to read and he wants to be like everyone else, but for his appearance and prejudice everyone is afraid of him.
My favorite scene is the one where the monster speaks to Frankenstein in the midst of glaciers and confesses his sad story; I think that in that moment we can see the real fragility of the monster. I don't like the scenes when he kills and he is violent, but they are very important to understand the real meaning of the story.
A particular question left me speachless: when the monster tells "What was I?". I think that this questions is the key of all the film: the creature dreams a normal life but for society he is too "strange" and none accepts him, so not even the creature knows what he is.
Usually I don't like horror films, but this was very beautiful and interesting.
